Did you know that litho printing has been around for well over 200 years? This print technology is popular because it offers a balance between quantity, quality and cost.
Let’s learn more about the history and benefits of litho printing.
A Brief History of Litho Printing
Alois Senefelder, a Bavarian author, invented lithogoraphy in 1796. The process of lithography was patented in 1799 and altered the printing industry forever. To date, it is still the most popular choice for high quality images on smooth surfaces.
Alois Senefelder
It was in the 1800s that colour litho printing was created, this was when the first rotary lithographic printing press was invented. This press allowed for mass production of prints, like that of letterpress printing technology.
How it Works
Lithography, also known as offset printing, functions on the principle that water, and oil repel each other. An inked visual is transferred from a photographic plate on to a rubber blanket. It is then added to paper stock for final print.
Basically, the image is not printed directly on paper, rather, it offsets on to other surfaces contacting the paper stock that it is being printed on.
The Benefits of Lithographic Printing
Litho printing is known for high quality imagery. It offers excellent quality at low costs compared to other printing options.
When it comes to large volumes of print, litho printing is exceptionally cost-effective. This is why it is the preferred printing method for newspapers, magazines, postcards, corporate stationery and textbook printing.
The greatest benefit of litho printing is that it prints on a variety of surfaces and is not simply limited to paper. If a surface is smooth and practical, images can be printed on it using lithography.
